Celebrating Sunderland over three days!

Sunderland has been a city for 21 years in 2013. And, this year’s Sunderland Festival is dedicated to celebrating the anniversary and encouraging local people to get together and have fun.

The festival will run from Friday 14 June to Sunday 16 June, at Herrington Country Park.

Friday 14 June

Friday night's fun from 6 to 10pm will include an open air movie screening of Mamma Mia, a fun fair and a food village.

Saturday 15 June

Saturday 15 June is a day of sports activities for everyone to get involved in. There’ll be demonstrations and the opportunity to have a go at lots of different sports and activities, including cycling, dancing, American football, boxing and much more. There’ll also be a food village and fun fair and new to the festival 'The Sunderland Rally Experience'.

'The Sunderland Rally Experience' gives you the chance to enjoy the spectacle of powerful cars, driven by Britain’s top rally drivers.

The Sunderland Rally Experience will start at 10.30am run for about 2 hours, and you can be in with a chance to be a part of it and take the wildest of rides.

At 3pm the big screen will be showing the 1973 FA Cup Match between Sunderland and Leeds. In keeping with the 70s theme the match will be followed by live bands playing 70s music to round off the day.

Sunday 16 June

On Sunday 16 June the focus is on arts and crafts, with opportunities for families of all ages to get involved in something creative. There’ll be a giant picnic rug for families to enjoy a rest or a picnic, as well as giant outdoor games like jenga and chess, a food village, fun fair, live music and kite flying.

Sunderland’s coming of age will be celebrated on the Sunday in particular, with displays commemorating the city’s last 21 years, and a competition for the best-decorated anniversary cake.

Now there’s a chance for you to compete to win the wildest ride you will ever take through Herrington Country Park. Buckled up alongside a top class driver, two competition winners can decide if they want to be a rally navigator and try to call the special stage pace notes, telling the driver which direction to take, or they can hang on, enjoy the ride and compete for the prize of ‘Best Scream of the Day’!
